The North Midlands
The Abbey Pumping Station is a preserved Victorian sewage pumping station situated on the north side of Leicester City Centre in Corporation Street. Easy of access and with good parking on site, it contains 4 magnificent Gimson Beam Engines which are preserved in working order, a permanent exhibition on Leicester's water supplies and sewage systems along with a great many industrial artefacts of all sorts and a collection of vintage vehicles. It benefits from a thriving preservation group and numerous functions are put on during the year to help keep the machinery in working order and so on.
Our current commitment is a Sunday in mid January and a weekend usually in late June, at which we display Meccano, Hornby and associated products of Binns Road. The show is well established, nicely informal, and is always well patronized by the locals. Nb we shall skip January 2018 while the museum is renovated.
Also - with a history almost as long as Skegex, 'STEAM TOYS IN ACTION' takes place on the first Sunday in February each year. It's the biggest show in Europe devoted to Toy Steam - Meccano models and engines are always to be seen.
